What others have to say...

  • We have loved the campfire activities especially popcorn and marshmallow toasting and the mud kitchen. The camp is really well set up. We’ve enjoyed campfire songs too.

  • They loved following the flour trail, playing hide and seek and especially the marshmallows! Mud kitchen was also a big hit, and they have enjoyed the bouncy net and swing.

What is wild tots?

Wild Tots is an outdoor Forest School toddler and pre school group based at Grammarcombe Woods, Ashcombe Estate, Near Exeter. Sessions are suitable for ages 0-5 and take place Mondays – Fridays. We are in the woods come rain or shine and can promise you a toddler group with a difference, where your child has the freedom to explore nature, learn new things and foster a lifelong love of the great outdoors while you get the chance for some great outdoor time with your toddler as well as a cuppa round the campfire and a chat with like minded mums and dads! What will we do?

Sessions will vary depending on the weather, the time of year and the wishes of the children; but to give you an idea a typical session might look something like this. It’s a short walk from the parking area to our camp, where your toddlers can explore the woods, help collect sticks for our campfire, take part in one of our Forest School activities, playing hide and seek, build dens  or get stuck into a craft activity. There’s a mud kitchen where we create our wonderful mud pies and more! No problem if it’s raining – our camp has a large covered area around the campfire. We know how to keep this age group interested, so the activities are quite short and we vary them each week. Each term is different too and we plan our activities according to the seasons and what is happening in the woods at that time. Our weekly cook-ups are very popular and with a different healthy snack each session, from apple pancakes to choccy bananas, they are often keen to try things that they may not usually like! There’s always time for hot chocolate and tea/coffee for the adults, followed by story time or a song to end the session. Please note: one or both parents (or carers/grandparents) are welcome and can swap or take turns to attend but at least one parent/carer must stay for the duration of the session. Babies in slings are welcome or you can bring a buggy, as it’s easy access to camp. Want a mum’s account? Visit exploring exeter and read local mum Stephanie Darkes’ great blog about Wild Tots….. but please note that we are no longer based at Haldon Forest Park.

Very Safe!

All staff are qualified group leaders, first aid trained and DBS checked. Wild Tots remain the responsibility of their parent throughout the sessions.

We are taking extra hygiene and safety measures during the COVID 19 pandemic.

    • Seating– Everyone will be asked to keep a 2 metre spacing if they sit on the benches around the fire for snacks, drinks or rest.
  • Hand cleansing – Cleaning our hands more often than usual. Within our sessions we will be developing routines to ensure children understand when and how to wash their hands, making sure they wash them thoroughly for at least 20 seconds using running water and soap and dry them thoroughly with a disposable towel, or use alcohol hand rub or sanitiser ensuring that all parts of the hands are covered. We have set up more tippy taps (to ensure running water for handwashing) around the camp. Asking that you wash your hands on arrival and departure.
  • Catch it, bin it, kill it – Ensuring everyone attending understands good respiratory hygiene by promoting the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach.
  • Equipment cleaning – Implementing an enhanced cleaning schedule, ensuring surfaces touched by children and staff are cleaned regularly, including, door handles and play equipment, see below for details.
    • Tools– All users will be asked to wash their hands thoroughly before and after use. The tool handle will be wiped with alcohol gel between uses.
    • Mud Kitchen– We have acquired multiple sets of mud kitchen equipment. Each set will be left for 72 hours before use by a different group.
    • Toilet–A hand sanitiser station will be placed outside the compost toilet to apply before and after entering toilet/using door handles. Contact points in the toilet will be disinfected between groups.
    • Hammocks – We have acquired multiple hammocks. Each hammock will be aired well for 72 hours between uses by different groups.
  • Food/drink– Food and drink will only be provided where stated. Where it is not provided, please bring all food and drink that will be needed for the session. Where drinks are provided, it would be appreciated if you could bring your own cup/mug. Where food is provided it will be served in individual portions (no sharing of food will be allowed).

Having said all these things, Wild Tots will still have the special element that has been exciting and entertaining so many parents and children for many years!
